Exfoliating Is It Really Necessary article image by Mayerling Skincare

Every 28 days or so, your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells, making room for new skin cells. However, sometimes, dead cells don’t always shed completely which can result in flaky and dry patches and clogged pores. This is where exfoliating comes in. It is the process of getting rid of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface through a chemical, granular substance, or exfoliation tool.

But if it’s something that the skin can do naturally, is exfoliating really necessary? The quick answer is yes, but you didn’t click on this article just for a one-word answer. Allow us to walk you through why it matters and when it matters.

Why It Matters

You now know that exfoliating does matter, but why? Here are our top 3 reasons:

  • Exfoliating unclogs pores

Exfoliation is defined as the removal of dead skin cells from the outer layer of our skin, which makes it easy to conclude that exfoliating unclogs our pores. Since this skin renewal step sweeps away dry skin, dead skin, and other surface debris, we prevent all the unwanted gunks from making their way into our pores. This then stops the formation of whiteheads and blackheads. More than this, having unclogged pores also prevents the appearance of acne.

If you want a great exfoliant that is good for all skin types, check out Mayerling’s Exfoliant Cleansing Scrub. It’s an amazing combo of naturally derived oil cleansers, glycolic acid, and fine grain exfoliators, making it perfect for cleansing and decongesting the skin. We bet you’ll also love how it will leave your skin with a supple finish.

  • Exfoliating helps other skincare and skin renewal products become more effective

When we have unclogged pores, it becomes easier for other skincare products to penetrate more deeply. That way, we get the best effects and benefits that our best anti-aging serum, day and night face cream, and anti-stress face mask can offer.

We recommend using Mayerling’s Exfoliant Cleansing Scrub with the other products in the Summer Rejuvenation Pack: the Mayerling Foaming Facial Cleanser and the ADEC Facial Moisturizer.

  • Exfoliating boosts radiance

While the skin naturally renews itself every 28 days, this process slows down as we age. This, therefore, lets dead skin cells pile up, making the skin look rough, dry, and dull. When we exfoliate, we break the bonds that keep dead skin cells together, giving new cells the chance to surface during skin renewal and giving you an amazing glow.

When It Matters

Here’s a rule of thumb that’s easy to remember: Exfoliate your face two to three times a week. However, if our reasons above are still not enough to convince you to exfoliate, here are four signs that you really, really need to start to commit to exfoliating.

  • When your skin is not absorbing your skincare products

We already mentioned this above, but we really just want to reiterate that exfoliating is necessary for your skin to absorb your skincare products. When you feel like your skincare products are just sitting on your skin and not sinking in, that’s a very clear sign. After all, no one wants their skincare products to become useless.

  • When your skin feels clogged

We know, we know. We already talked about how exfoliating can unclog your pores, but it’s still worth mentioning that clogged pores are a sign that you need to start exfoliating. If you wash your face and it still doesn’t feel enough, you might want to get into the world of exfoliating.

  • When your skin is dull

Do you know how shiny furniture reflects light better when they’re smooth? It’s kind of the same thing with our skin. When you don’t see the light-reflective quality of your skin or when it feels dry to the touch, this likely means that it’s already dull. When you exfoliate, your skin becomes smooth and even-toned, allowing light to reflect better. Exfoliation smoothens your skin and helps it glow.

  • When you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun

When we’re exposed to the sun for quite some time, our skin becomes thicker. This means you’ll need a good exfoliation session. Just be sure you’re not sunburnt when you exfoliate.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to exfoliate, this is it. Trust us—your skin, your pores, and your skincare products will thank you for it!
