Ordinary Cosmetics cannot repair aged and sun damaged skin. Moisturisers play a useful role in skin maintenance and temporarily enhance the skin’s appearance.
In order to significantly improve the skin’s texture, appearance and smoothness, the skin must be resurfaced; that is the old skin must be removed, allowing new skin to take its place.
This can be achieved by the use of peeling agents such as plant acids, Glycolic and Salicylic Acid followed by a regime of Cosmeceutical home treatments.
The purpose of a facial peel is to create an even, controlled shedding of several layers of damaged skin cells allowing new youthful, non damaged skin to form.
Mayerling’s G20 Glycolic acid peels are performed over a set period of time (weekly for 8 – 12 weeks). The shorter the period between the peels and the deeper the peel the sooner the maximum benefits are obtained.
Both acids work well on the skin’s surface to loosen old, dead skin and reveal fresh newer skin.
Repeated and regular application to the skin diminishes wrinkles significantly and lightens aged or pigment spots. Clients should sustain their improvement with Mayerling’s Cosmeceutical home treatments.
S20 works deeper and is able to penetrate into the pores and unclog them. It also has high antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which make it ideal for use in problematic skin and acne.
The time interval between peels is generally longer than Glycolic acid – at least two weeks. With this program the client does not have to go into “hiding or hibernation” but in most cases, may return to their daily social or work activities after their S20 peel.
What are Beta Hydroxy Acids and how do they work?
BHAs such as Salicylic Acid refine the skins texture by reducing the stratum corneum thickness through exfoliation. BHAs work very well for oily, acne, thick, open pore skin.
Salicylic has a tightening and firming effect due to its ability to penetrate through the dermis. It also has a strong anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. BHA’s occur naturally in plants

These acids are able to improve the skin because they have molecules small enough to penetrate the outer (horny) layer of the skin, and reach the lower (dermis) layer. Also, they work by dissolving the cement that holds dead skin cells together, increasing cell turnover, and sloughing off dull, rough skin on the surface.
What are Alpha Hydroxy Acids and how do they work?
AHAs have the ability to normalise the stratum corneum (top layer of the epidermis) by reducing its thickness through exfoliation, the creation of a more compact structure.
Glycolic Acid AHA
Glycolic Acid is derived from sugar cane. It is a water soluble acid and is used to weaken the bonds that hold dead skin cells together. When these bonds are weakened, the dead cells can be shed from the surface of the skin resulting in skin that appears fresher, smoother and glowing. Glycolic acid brings a uniform complexion and smooth texture to the skin. All skin types can enjoy this benefit.
Glycolic Acid can be used on its own. A course of six (6) G20 treatments has a cumulative effect similar to that of a single deep peel. However, it does not involve any social inconvenience, contraindications nor down time.
